Welcome to the Health e Connections newsletter! This newsletter is designed to give you immediate recommendations for your daily work and offer long-term solutions for your practice. Each month will highlight things that matter, such as finance, education, culture, and other relevant topics. We hope you take away a pearl or two each month!
Jill Arena's Podcast: Medical Money Matters
We’re excited to announce the launch of Jill’s podcast: Medical Money Matters!
In her 30 years of running medical practices, Jill has learned a lot about business and a lot about what we haven’t taught physicians about business. In this country, we do a fabulous job of training clinicians to be good doctors – by giving them the latest and greatest diagnostics, cutting-edge pharmaceuticals and world-class technology. But we give them no training in how to operate a business. In eight years of formal education, there are no classes on finance, leadership or contract negotiations. Nothing about managing people or leading change. What does this mean? It means when doctors leave residency and go into practice, they are effectively stepping into multi-million-dollar businesses without having any training in how to operate them.
Her podcast is designed as a gift to give back to a community that has been good to her. Jill’s commitment to the audience is to bring resources, experts, and answers so they can achieve mastery over the financial and business aspects of their practice. Each month will feature two or three solocasts to break down a topic and one or two interviews where we’ll take a deeper dive with an industry expert.
Many of us have a habit of making New Year’s resolutions, and it’s always fun – and funny – to see which ones you’ve broken and how quickly. So, instead of that annual resolution to lose 10 pounds, we’ve got a timelier one for you that is easy to keep!
In last month’s newsletter, we talked about culturally inclusive office holiday celebrations. In follow up to that, we uncovered this article which provides a great synopsis of winter holidays celebrated by various religious and cultural groups. So, if you’ll join us in making a resolution to improve culture inclusivity, here’s a great resource for getting educated: https://nicenews.com/culture/winter-holidays-explainer/
The Visual Display of Quantitative Information by Edward Tufte
Edward Tufte has long been considered the godfather of the visual display of complex data sets. His landmark book, The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, takes a deep dive into how to present numerical and quantitative data in a way that is pictorial, visual, and easily digested. This has been a favorite book for many years and has prompted many a discussion around Key Performance Indicator dashboards.
From his website:
“The classic book on statistical graphics, charts, tables. Theory and practice in the design of data graphics, 250 illustrations of the best (and a few of the worst) statistical graphics, with detailed analysis of how to display data for precise, effective, quick analysis. Design of the high-resolution displays, small multiples. Editing and improving graphics. The data-ink ratio. Time-series, relational graphics, data maps, multivariate designs. Detection of graphical deception: design variation vs. data variation. Sources of deception. Aesthetics and data graphical displays.”
And if you’d like to purchase a copy of any of his four books or if you’re really “geeking out” and want to do the online course, you can check out his website here: https://www.edwardtufte.com/tufte/books_vdqi
